In 1988 the first Diehl Lighthouse was installed on Grand Lake in Oklahoma at the Gran Tara Housing addition. From there the idea grew to place more lighthouses at different points on the lake to serve as navigational aids, hazard warnings and service beacons. Some interested lake residents formed a committee to determine feasible ways to finance and install the lighthouses. Corporations, such as Budweiser, American Airlines and area marinas were approached to contribute 1/2 of the purchase and installation price of the lighthouses. Private donations were collected to make up the remainder. In the period of 3 years, 18 Diehl Aero-Nautical Co. lighthouses were installed on Grand Lake. |
| The lighthouses were purchased according to the interest and need. The private donations came from individual homeowner's associations that wanted a lighthouse on their point and from a general fund. Two marinas purchased lighthouses to promote their name and indicate a place for public phone, gas, boat service etc. |
| Two different types of foundations were used. For land application a concrete slab was poured by a construction company. For water installation, tripods were fabricated. The assembled lighthouses were trucked in or transported by barge to the point of installation. Interested volunteers met to install the units and connect them to a power source. When all the lighthouses were installed, the project was donated to the Grand River Dam Authority for their control and maintenance.
